heddle pulley, Ivory coast. Heddle pulleys were used on the
west African narrow strip loom. Although they served a
primarily utilitarian function they also called attention to
the skill of the carver, advertising his availability to
carve other art. This pulley has an anthropomorphic finial
representing a traditional Baule masked dancer. Very dry
patina with old blue paint. Measures 7" tall.
